Eight of the 45 police personnel who suffered injuries in Saturday’s violence at Azad Maidan in the city are in a critical condition, hospital authorities said on Sunday. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli claimed that all the injured policemen were out of danger.
“Out of the total of 54 injured, 45 were policemen. We have discharged most of them. But there are eight policemen with head injuries who are still critical. We will keep them under observation for another 24 hours,” T.P. Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital told The Hindu.
Arun Sathe, a constable with the State Reserve Police Force, said: “I am usually on duty at the Commissioner’s office. On Saturday I was posted near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. As trouble began, I was attacked. The mob had wooden rods…They even snatched my lathi and started to hit me with it,” he told The Hindu from his hospital bed.
Photographer Prashant Sawant, who was also injured after he was targeted by the mob, was discharged from hospital on Sunday morning.
