Drunk cop sends police on wild-goose chase

Goes missing after threatening suicide on shared radio channel

May 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - New Delhi:

A disgruntled police constable, who is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol, forced his entire force to embark upon a wild-goose chase after threatening to commit suicide on the shared radio transmission channel here on Sunday evening.

The said constable whose name is deliberately being withheld, made a call to the Central Police Control Room (CPCR) around four pm and announced that he was going to kill himself due to the “pressure tactics” of his seniors.

“He made a PCR call and threatened the operator before declaring that he was going to hang himself in the forested area behind the Mandir Marg police station,” said a source adding that he “seemed to be under the influence of alcohol when he made the call”.

“The caller was made to calm down before he began complaining about how he was being forced to continue with a punishment posting and his seniors were, in spite of protocol in such cases, disallowing him to plead his case in front of senior officials in search of a solution,” the officer added.

According to a source, the caller claimed he was being forced to remain with the 3{+r}{+d}Battalion despite having already served the said unit for two consecutive terms already adding that whenever he approached a senior official for help, he was either turned down or not given an audience.

Technical surveillance

After having related his woes to the call attendant, who, in the meantime, had alerted units stationed in the Mandir Marg area to look for him, the caller abruptly hung up and “disappeared” with messages to trace him and nip his potential suicide bid in the bud, shouted across the Delhi Police wireless network.

“All efforts to physically trace him had failed by the time we mounted technical surveillance on him; his last location was traced to Chawri Bazar in North Delhi after which a team was despatched to the area to locate him – but couldn't,” the officer said.

“We are in the process of locating him and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against him for the hoax call made by him,” added the officer.
