Dacoit and gang leader Rajendra Gujjar was killed in an encounter with police at Gopiapura village near Kuwari river in the district. Gujjar had a bounty of Rs 15,000 on his head.
“Rajendra Gujjar, who was involved in various crimes in the district, was killed in an encounter with Morena Police,” Chambal Range IG, Sanjay Jha told reporters on Tuesday.
However, other members of the gang managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness, he said.
Acting on a tip off, police surrounded the area and asked the dacoits to surrender but they allegedly opened fire. Gujjar was killed in the gun-battle that ensued, according to Mr Jha. A 315 bore Mauser gun and 50 live cartridges were recovered from Gujjar, Jha said.
Two police personnel including a Sub—Inspector also sustained bullet injuries in the encounter, he said.
Several cases of murder, armed robbery, loot and kidnapping have been registered against Gujjar and his gang in the district.
