Disapproving of the “political atmosphere” outside being brought into to the Calcutta High Court everyday, Chief Justice Arun Mishra on Wednesday chastised counsel for letting loose their emotions.
“This happens only here and nowhere else,” Justice Mishra said following heated arguments between senior counsel Subrata Mukherjee and government pleader Ashok Banerjee.
Counsel were arguing before a Division Bench of Justices Mishra and Joymalya Bagchi on a public interest litigation seeking a CBI probe into the Saradha Group scam.
“The political atmosphere is being brought into court, there is so much hostility…We do not expect counsel to fight like this. This is not a street but a court,” Justice Mishra said.
They should not “create a scene” and should be aware of “what kind of emotions should not be expressed in court,” he said.
“If you act like this [again], we will be the last persons to hear you,” Justice Mishra said.
Mr. Mukherjee, who was appearing for the petitioner, urged the court to either take a decision on the matter or reject the petition given that the scam was a burning issue claiming lives every day.
