Doctor held for conducting sex determination test

February 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 03:10 pm IST - GURGAON:

A doctor conducting a sex determination test at the Bhatnagar Hospital here was caught red-handed on Sunday.

Civil Surgeon Ramesh Dhankhar said the authorities had received a tip-off about the test being conducted at Bhatnagar Hospital, which is located near the DSD Government College on the Railway Road here.

Acting on the tip-off, a team under Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash sent a decoy customer to Krishna, who works as the Lady Health Visitor (LHV) at the Primary Health Center in Bhondsi. The accused allegedly demanded Rs. 20,000 for getting the test done.

After the amount was handed over, Krishna took the decoy customer to Bhatnagar Hospital where one Renu, a receptionist, conducted an ultrasound on the foetus in violation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act. Mandatory provisions such as registering the patient and filling Form-F before an ultrasonography were not adhered to.

The accused was nabbed once the receptionist started conducting the ultrasound.

The team comprising Dr. Dhankhar, District Drug Controller Amandeep Chauhan, Deputy Civil Surgeon Saryu Sharma and Secretary of District Red Cross Society Shyam Sunder Sharma sealed the ultrasound machine on the spot and recommended that an FIR be registered against Vinita Bhatnagar, gynaecologist at the hospital; B.M. Bhatnagar, owner of hospital; LHV Krishna and Renu — who conducted the ultrasound. A report for lodging an FIR against all four of them has been sent to the City Police Station.
