Padmashree Dingku Ngangom who was awarded Arjuna award for bagging a gold medal in the Asian games in 1998 was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days on Friday evening after his bail application was rejected.

The boxer was arrested for assaulting three woman weight lifters on Thursday night. He was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by the mother of Arambala Soibam — one of the weight lifters who is still in a private hospital.

According to some newspapers, the boxer regretted the incident and sought forgiveness from the girls and the people.

A heavy rush of people in the court complex forced the police to delay his appearance in the court of Imphal east chief judicial magistrate Memcha Rajkumar. While rejecting the bail application, the magistrate ordered the accused to be remanded to judicial cusotdy for 15 days under sections 324 and 354.

Meanwhile, SAI sources said that the explanation given by the boxer about the incident was not satisfactory. As a result a departmental inquiry has been started.
