‘Difficult to implement in Gurgaon’

April 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:26 am IST - GURGAON:

A day after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in a historic decision banned plying of over 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi and neighbouring cities, the Gurgaon local administration conceded that it would not be an easy task to enforce the orders on the ground.

“There is a large number of floating population who drive these vehicles and they will have to be stopped from entering the city. There are also livelihood issues attached to it,” said Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash.

Saying that he was yet to go through the order, Mr. Satyaprakash said that he needed to asses the size of intervention required for the implementation of the order. “The court order will be implemented. But I need to assess the size of intervention. We need to find out how many diesel vehicles over 10 years old are registered in Gurgaon. The amount of manpower required to implement the order. I also need to decide as to which agency should be entrusted with the job to implement the order, whether the Regional Transport Authority or the police,” said Mr. Satyaprakash.

The NGT has also ordered “immediate stoppage” of construction activities on both sides of Golf Course Road in Gurgaon over air pollution concerns.
