Two constables, allegedly seen damaging property of some of the Dhule riot victims in a video footage submitted by a few social organisations, have been suspended . “On the basis of the interim report of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, we have suspended two constables on January 18 for their misconduct during the curfew imposed in the city,” Dhule Superintendent of Police Pradeep Deshpande told The Hindu on Sunday.

A single-person inquiry headed by the Deputy Superintendent was looking into the allegations against police constables Pramod Shivaji Ishi and Sumit Namdeo Thakur. Mr. Deshpande said further action against the duo would be taken after the completion of the inquiry.

When asked if such action would be taken against other police personnel seen in the video, he said the police would await the inquiry report before deciding on the future course of action.

A citizens’ fact-finding committee visited Dhule a few days ago and alleged that the police were involved in damaging and destroying property . They showed the footage of the riots, allegedly taken by some riot victim on his-or-her cell phone, to the media in which a group of policemen are vandalising property. . One sequence showed the policemen setting a house ablaze.

After the committee submitted the footage to senior police officials, demand for action against the involved policemen gained momentum.
