Despite strike, R-Day in Manipur peaceful

January 27, 2013 03:29 am | Updated 03:29 am IST - IMPHAL:

The 64th Republic Day celebrations were by and large peaceful, despite a boycott and general strike called by underground organisations. No casualty was reported despite sporadic incidents during official functions.

Governor Gurubachan Jagat hoisted the national flag at the historic Kangla in Imphal. Over 100 contingents of students, cultural organisations, police and security forces took part.

On the occasion, 36 police and paramilitary personnel were given medals for meritorious services.

Low public attendance

Public attendance was low since the insurgents had penetrated even the First Battalion of Manipur Rifles ground from where all contingents marched past and later Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his senior colleagues would attend the function.
