In a late night raid at a hotel in Patna on Monday, the city police arrested Mohan Srivastava, deputy mayor of a town in Bihar’s Gaya district and six others in a human trafficking case. Busting a sex racket, the police team also rescued two minor girls.

Mr. Srivastava has three previous police cases under other offences against him in Gaya. The other accused persons are Ajay Kumar, Jitendra Kumar Verma, Pintu Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Jitendra Prasad and Vinod Kumar Madal.

The police have booked all the accused persons under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, and Sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping), 376 (g) (pertaining to gang-rape) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

As per the statement of the girls to the police, Mr. Srivastava and others forcibly brought them here from Motihari in Bihar with the help of a local woman. On the way, the girls were issued several threats. When the duo was brought here, they were gang-raped at a hotel, a police press note said.

There were protests against Mr. Srivastava in Gaya after the incident came to light.
