Political parties and human rights activists have demanded a judicial probe into the death of an accused due to alleged torture at a police station in Tripura last week. Benue Shukla Baidya died in the wee hours on May 4, 12 days after he was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries. The incident triggered tension in parts of Kamalpur. Irate mob damaged vehicles and clashed with the police after the body of deceased was taken to the area.

The Tripura government earlier suspended sub-inspector Alauddin Majumder pending enquiry into the incident. The family of the victim registered a police complaint against Majumder and a Havildar – Sujit Debnath — allegedly responsible for the ‘torture.’

The Tripura Human Rights Organisation (THRO) which was first to bring the incident to public knowledge demanded a judicial probe. The THRO activists organised protests outside the police headquarters in Agartala and submitted a memorandum to the Director-General of Police.
