Mobs torched about 20 shops in the old area of Bareilly on Saturday though curfew has been in force in most parts of the city affected by communal violence. Authorities have rushed additional forces to the city.

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions there, and provided the police a helicopter for aerial monitoring of the trouble-hit areas, official sources said.

Fire tenders were rushed to the Qutubkhana sabzi mandi, one of the oldest markets in the city, where members of a community torched shops, the police said.

“After large-scale violence in which nearly 20 people, including a Superintendent of Police and some other policemen were injured, curfew has been extended to Subhash Nagar. The situation is tense but under control,” the sources said.
