A 60-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide on Thursday in a village of Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Jai Narayan Meena, a resident of village Deepgaon Kalan under Sirali Police Station, consumed poisonous substance under a tree in his farm this afternoon, local police station in charge Sushil Patel said.

Patel said his body was found under a tree on the outskirts of the village.

“A suicide note was also recovered from the spot. It was stated in the suicide note that he was taking the extreme step due to increasing debt,” the police officer added.

According to Meena’s brother Prem Narayan, Jai Narayan had taken loan of ₹2.5 lakh from a bank and was finding it difficult to repay them.

Police handed over the body to his kin after the post-mortem.

Harda Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Pratap Singh told PTI that the police are probing further on basis of the suicide note.
