Debt - ridden farmer ends life

A debt-ridden farmer from Bhiwandi taluka ended his life after he was unable to pay back his loans following crop failure, police said today.

The incident took place last night when Tukaram Sadu Patil, 53, of Godhade hanged himself at his residence here, they said.

Last year due to heavy rains, he had lost his crops and had pledged gold ornaments to take a loan from a money lender.

According to reports he had also taken loan of Rs 5000 towards crop loan from a multi-purpose co-operative credit society and money from some relatives.

Unable to manage his finances, he took the extreme step.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and investigations are on.
