The Maharashtra police’s final report on the mysterious death of three Dalit sisters in Bhandara district in western Maharashtra, has concluded it a case of accidental drowning.
On February 14, 2013 the sisters – aged five, nine and 11 – went missing from Murmadi village in Lakhni taluka of Bhandara. On February 16, their bodies were found in a well about two km from their home. Based on the report of the local medical officers, police registered a case of rape and murder. But subsequently it was found that the autopsy was performed hurriedly and the sisters weren’t sexually assaulted.
The government also appointed a team of senior forensic to look into the allegations. In April last year they submitted a report concluding that the girls weren’t raped and the deaths could be homicidal, suicidal or accidental. “Another six-member committee which studied the case thoroughly, concluded that the girls died due to accidental drowning. We are soon going to file closure report in a local court,” a source told The Hindu .
