The deadlock over construction of Lower Siang hydro electric project at Pangging in East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh has come to an end with various organizations calling off their agitation.

The 2007 mw project faced stiff opposition from various organizations, led by Adi Students Union (AdiSU), over several issues including displacement of people and environmental impact.

During a consultative meeting held here on Tuesday between the project affected locals, the power developer, panchayat leaders and MLAs, a consensus was arrived to allow the construction on guarantee of social responsibility by the project executor, officials said on Wednesday.

Several issues pertaining to dam height, environmental impact, displacement, catchment area treatment were discussed during the meeting.

Meanwhile, Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh is arriving in the district on September 11 for a public hearing on hydro power projects in the State, sources said.

The 2000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro power project is being developed by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
