Dasara elephant, Gajendra, on Sunday evening ran amok in the elephant camp at K Gudi, killing a mahout and attacking another elephant.

Conservator of Forests, BRT Range, Lingaraju told The Hindu that the mahout, Ganapathi (45), was gored to death when he tried to prevent Gajendra, who was in heat, from attacking another Dasara elephant Srirama at the elephant camp.

“Though Ganapathi was rushed to the hospital, he died en route,” Mr. Lingaraju said.

After goring Ganapathi, 60-year-old Gajendra attacked Srirama (59).
