A Dalit youth was allegedly set ablaze by three brothers for reportedly refusing to work for them in Atbei village of Chirgaon in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Within 24 hours of the incident, the police claimed that the deceased was an alcoholic and had set himself on fire following a dispute with the three brothers.

The State IG ( Law and Order) Amrendra Kumar Sengar told reporters on Monday that following an inquiry by the Circle Officer of Chirgaon and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, it was found that the charges mentioned in the FIR were false.

The complaint lodged by the deceased Pawan’s father, Gayadin, in which Rajesh Yadav, Brijesh Yadav and Suresh Yadav, and their father were named as accused.

Suresh and Brijesh are in the Home Guards.

Pawan succumbed to his burn injuries in Jhansi Medical College, while his younger brother, who tried to save him, is reportedly battling for his life with 60 per cent burns.
