Uttar Pradesh’s controversial politician and former MP D.P. Yadav, who was convicted in the Mahendra Singh Bhati murder case, surrendered in a special CBI court, here, on Monday.

In December 1992, Mahendra Singh Bhati, who was the MLA from Ghaziabad’s Dadri area, was gunned down at the Dadri railway crossing.

The CBI had taken up the case in 1993, and had submitted a chargesheet against eight persons, four of whom died during the trial.

On February 28 this year, CBI declared D.P. Yadav, Pal Singh, Karan Yadav, and Praneet Bhati in Mahendra Singh Bhati’s guilty of Bhati’s murder, and convicted the four under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The convicted persons, barring Yadav, were arrested on February 28. On the same day, an arrest warrant was issued against him, as he was absent in the special CBI court. Yadav surrendered on Monday and was sent to jail.

The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment for the guilty persons on Tuesday, March 10.
