Cultural research centre opened

: South Odisha cultural research centre was inaugurated on the campus of Berhampur University.

According to State minister for higher education, this centre would be involved in research on rich cultural and folk traditions of south Odisha.

This centre also houses items related to different folk arts, folk dances, tribal artifacts and preserved old manuscripts.

A seminar on cultural heritage of south Odisha had been organized by the Odia department of the university as part of the inauguration ceremony of this new research centre.

The speakers in this seminar were of the opinion that history of Odisha is incomplete without special thrust on happenings of south Odisha.

Kalinga, the ancient name of Odisha had originated from south Odisha.

South Odisha and its leaders had played a major role in the formation of modern Odisha State during the British era on linguistic basis.

Under a special assistance programme, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned 58 lakh rupees to this newly established south Odisha cultural research centre. Out of this, 24 lakh rupees has already reached Berhampur University.
