: After indigenous parties, the CPI (M) has demanded an amendment to the provisions of Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to empower tribal autonomous district councils in Northeast India. MP Jitendra Choudhury raised the issue in Lok Sabha on Monday to seek the intervention of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to fulfil the aspirations of tribals.

Moving a proposal, Mr Choudhury who was elected from tribal reserved East Tripura constituency said: “In course of time, the provisions of the 6th schedule were found to be inadequate to meet the needs of the people”.

The demand in Lok Sabha attains a special meaning as parties are putting forward demands in view of ensuing elections to the Tripura tribal areas autonomous district council (TTAADC) in May.
