The national council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) will elect the national executive, national secretariat and the general secretary on Sunday here.

The party congress on the concluding day will also elect the central control commission and the new 125-member national council.

CPI national council secretary Shameem Faizee said constitutional amendments were brought to limit term of office by general secretary and State unit secretaries to nine years. As per the proposed amendment, they can hold three terms (a term - three years) and for third term, an individual must obtain two-third votes of election body.

“The idea behind bringing new amendments is to bridge the generation gap and infuse new blood into the party, said Mr. Faizee while adding the amendments should be approved by the plenary of the party congress.

Passing a resolution on education on Saturday, the party congress condemned the Narendra Modi government’s reduction of budgetary allocation on education and said it was a reflection of the callous attitude of the government towards the social sector.

West Bengal situation

Expressing serious concern over the ‘retrograde’ situation developing in West Bengal, the CPI party congress said, “The anti-people role of the State government and scams at the highest level, rampant corrupt practices of the ruling party Ministers, MPs, MLAs have weakened the social security system.”

The party congress called upon all the left and democratic and progressive forces to rise to the occasion to save West Bengal from nefarious ruling forces and communal designs of the BJP.

It also pointed out that instances of suicide and unnatural deaths of innocent people because of the chit fund scams were on the rise.
