Expressing dissatisfaction over the Bombay High Court’s decision to allow New Year celebrations till 5 a.m., Maharashtra’s Social Justice Minister Shivajirao Moghe said on Tuesday that courts should not encourage western culture.

“Extending the time limit is wrong. Such Western culture should not be encouraged by courts or the government,” Mr. Moghe said at a press conference in Mumbai.

The Shiv Sena, usually known for its conservative stand against such celebrations, had come out openly in support of the hotel owners.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday said that it would think of framing a comprehensive policy for such celebrations. “We will plan a comprehensive law in 2014 to end all of this. You won’t have such a situation next year-end,” Home Minister R.R. Patil said in Mumbai.
