Cops want 17-yr-old murder accused to be tried as adult

July 18, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi Police plan to write to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to try the 17-year-old domestic help, who allegedly stabbed his 60-year-old employer to death at her Dwarka residence, as an adult.

Uma Sharma, the victim, was allegedly stabbed 22 times by the juvenile on Friday afternoon.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Surender Kumar told The Hindu that considering the heinous nature of the crime and the brutality involved, it seemed a fit case for trying the boy as an adult.

Accused sent to

juvenile home

“We will be writing to the JJB in the next few days and seek their nod. He has currently been sent to a juvenile home,” said Mr. Kumar.

As per the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, which came into effect in mid-January, the boy could be tried as an adult if the Board considers him mentally and physically capable of committing the heinous offences and as having the ability to understand the consequences.

Last month, a JJB accepted the Delhi Police’s application to try the juvenile accused in the Mercedes hit-and-run case reported from Civil Lines as an adult.

‘Fake robbery’

The 17-year-old domestic help, who was upset at being repeatedly admonished for not cooking well, tried to pass off the incident as a case of robbery until the police questioned him. Divulging details, Mr. Kumar said that after murdering the woman, the juvenile took Rs. 3,100 and a gold chain from her possession before hiding it in his room.

“He made a call to the woman’s son and told him that two men had come to the house and decamped with the aforementioned articles after murdering Ms. Sharma and assaulting him.

However, the employer got suspicious and upon reaching home, questioned him thoroughly, even landing a few blows in the process. The juvenile then broke down and confessed to his crime,” said Mr. Kumar.

The boy, a native of Darbhanga in Bihar, was recently hired as domestic help.

No police verification had been conducted for him as he had been referred through a relative.

The woman, who allegedly did not appreciate his culinary skills, would frequently verbally abuse him.
