More than 20 police personnel remained mute spectators even as the van they boarded hit a teacher of city-based school that led to latter’s death here on Monday.
The incident took place in the morning when Pramod Kumar Das, a teacher of Buxi Jagabandhu English Medium (BJEM) School-II, was on his way to school. The speeding police van hit his bike from the behind along Tankapani Road.
While the teacher was lying insentient at the spot, his colleagues kept requesting the police personnel to help shift him to hospital. However, police personnel did not budge. Colleagues’ desperate attempts to intercept other vehicles plying on the road also proved futile. Even, ambulance took time to reach there. The teacher subsequently died on the spot.
“I have never come across such insensitive police. Their first duty was to ensure the accident victim is shifted to a hospital. However, they did not respond to situation,” said Kshyankia Das, principal of BJEM School-II.
On finding the teacher succumbing to injuries, local people started pelting stone at police van and damaged the vehicle. Local alleged that driver of police vehicle was heavily drunk.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Satyabrata Bhoi, who rushed the spot to control situation, said: “Blood sample of driver has been sent for test. If he is found to have consumed alcohol, stringent action would be taken against him.”
