Cops face the heat as Akhilesh cracks the whip

22 officials, including IAS officer, have been suspended

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has suspended 22 officials, including an IAS officer, in the aftermath of a slew of incidents involving the police and corruption charges levelled against senior officials.

Besides IAS officer Shraddha Mishra, those suspended late Thursday night include Aligarh city’s Circle Officer Arun Kumar Singh, head constable Soren Singh and constable Anil Kumar, who faced the music for the brutal assault on women who protested against the alleged rape and murder of a six-year-old girl at Bannadevi earlier in the day.

Others suspended are seven policemen of the Hasanganj station in Lucknow, including Station Officer Mohammad Javed Khan, on the charge of dereliction of duty, after the death in custody of a youth on April 17.

Case filed

A case of murder has been filed against them.

A government release said that among the officials suspended were four sub-divisional magistrates, four forest officials, a circle officer and 12 sub-inspectors, head constables and constables.

Around midnight came another statement, announcing the suspension of Ms. Mishra. Now posted as Special Secretary (Small Industries), the IAS officer was attached to the Board of Revenue.

She has been charged with dereliction of duty when she served as Special Secretary, Health, and Director, Ayurveda. The sub-divisional magistrates are Mahendra Mishra of Tehsil Bhiti, Manoj of Tehsil Tanda in Ambedkar Nagar district, Balram Singh of Tehsil Binki in Fatehpur and Surendra Singh of Nagina Tehsil in Bijnore.

They have been charged with irregularities in grain allocation under the Public Distribution System.

O.P. Ambasht, K.R. Meena, Motilal and Kripal Singh, posted in the Najibabad forest division of Bijnore district, have been suspended after a probe committee uncovered their involvement in illegal felling of trees.

Meanwhile, Ramji Lal, Station Officer of the Afzalgarh station in Bijnore, and sub-inspector Raj Singh, who were suspended for their failure to register a First Information Report from a minor rape victim on April 11, were arrested on Thursday.

Woman constable Sukhraj Kaur was suspended.
