A day after she was elected legislator from Morva Hadaf in central Gujarat, Savita Khant died due to cerebral haemorrhage in a private hospital in Vadodara.

Ms. Khant (53) of the Congress had fallen off a chair at the counting centre on Thursday and was rushed to a hospital in Godhra. Later, she was shifted to Vadodara, where she died on Friday. She had defeated the BJP’s Bijal Damor by more than 11,000 votes but could not hear of her victory.

The Congress tally in the new Assembly has come down to 60. Chief Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing Opposition leader Shaktisinh Gohil and Gujarat Congress chief Arjun Modvadia condoled Ms. Khant’s demise.
