The Congress on Tuesday shot a letter to the Election Commission of India requesting change in the date for the Panaji byelection scheduled for February 13.

Congress spokesperson Sunil Kavthankar told The Hindu that in their letter, they have pointed out that the model code of conduct which remains in operation till the counting of votes on February 16 coincides with the Goa Carnival festivities.

The Goa Carnival starts on February 14 and is spread over four days, while the counting of votes will be taken up on February 16. Moreover, February 14 also happens to be Valentines Day, it has pointed out.

Again the party has objected to the counting of votes polled in the Delhi Assembly elections to be taken up on February 10, arguing that the results are likely to influence the voting in the Febraury 13 Panaji by-poll.
