Congress leads in Panchayat polls in Rajasthan

Candidates of the ruling Congress were leading in at least 60 per cent of Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti seats after counting of votes was taken up on Monday, a state election department spokesman said.

Opposition BJP candidates were ahead in some 30 per cent seats, he said.

Counting was taken up for 33 Zila Parishads and 248 Panchayat Samitis which went to polls in three phases on January 20, 29 and February 2.

Initial trends indicated that in the 101-member Jaipur Zila Parishad, the Congress was leading in 60, BJP in 33 and others in 8 seats.

The formation of Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samitis would be completed after the counting, the spokesman added.
