Congress demands land legislation

April 25, 2015 11:58 pm | Updated 11:58 pm IST - PANAJI:

The Congress party on Saturday demanded that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the State immediately bring a legislation that prohibits non-agriculturists and outsiders from buying agricultural land in the State.

Ramakant Khalap, chief spokesperson of the Congress in Goa, told reporters on Saturday that the BJP had made a poll promise to grant special status to Goa under Article 371 of the Constitution to protect its land and identity.

On the issue of protecting the rights of tillers of land under Agricultural Tenancy Act, he referred to a report — submitted by Goa State Law Commission under his chairmanship in 2012 — which had advocated administrative reforms. The report stressed the need for dedicated Revenue courts under a Goa Revenue Code to resolve tenancy disputes.
