Several people have been injured in clashes between supporters of political parties in the Assembly poll-bound Tripura.
Tension gripped Jirania, 10 km east of Agartala, after supporters of the CPI (M) and Congress repeatedly clashed leaving eight injured. The condition of two is serious, doctors at GB Hospital said on Wednesday.
In another incident, four supporters of the Congress received minor injuries in an alleged attack by CPI (M) cadres at Lalchara in Khowai of West Tripura. The attackers also ransacked some houses in the locality on Tuesday night.
Congress supporters staged protests outside Radhakishorepur police station in Gumti district after block Youth Congress general secretary Ali Ashraf was attacked.
Police arrested three accused in connection with the molestation of Congress supporters at Gokulpur on Wednesday. According to the complaint lodged by the victims, the culprits molested them when they were returning from a party meeting last week.
In the nearby Kathalia of Shantirazar, police arrested a CPI (M) supporter for pelting stones on a procession of a rival party.
Elsewhere, police arrested two men on a charge of assaulting North Tripura Additional Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty at Dighalbag area. Aminul Haq and Nazrul Islam hit the police officer when he intercepted the vehicle they were travelling in.
As many as 191 SIM cards of different mobile service providers were recovered from them. The incident took a political turn as Aminul Haq is a relative of the CPI (M) candidate from Kurti constituency, Faizur Rahman.
The CPI (M) alleged that Congress workers damaged several election booth offices and hoardings of Left Front candidates at different places. The party drew the attention of the Election Commission to the incidents.
Congress candidate of Pecharthal in north Triprua Purnita Chakma and BJP’s Bidyut Ghosh contesting from Ramnagar in Agartala alleged they had received death threats. Both lodged complaints with the police.
