: A junior college in Boudh district of Odisha was set on fire by angry students, who could not appear for the annual Plus Two Arts examination on Tuesday as admit cards were not issued.

When more than 100 students, who were enrolled in correspondence courses with Lopamudra Junior College, Manamunda, reached the centre to write their English papers in the morning, they were in for rude shock.

The college authorities could not provide admit cards to appear for the Plus Two examination.

Furious over the development, students started ransacking Lopamudra Junior College. Computers and important documents of the college were torched. A group of students climbed the asbestos roof of the college and started dismantling it. Some employees of the college managed to flee the spot. “Students enrolled in the distance education programme could not be issued admit cards as they did not pay the fees. Since the college is new and is running with limited funds, the fee which is around Rs. 2.5 lakh could not be deposited in Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) office. As a result, admit cards were not issued,” Ms. Kolita admitted.

Reacting to the incident, Madhusudan Mishra, Collector of Boudh, said, “It was found that the fee was not deposited with the CHSE because of which students were not issued admit cards. We will surely take action against college authorities who spoiled the career of students.”

The annual Plus Two examination which started on March 2 would end on March 24. A total of 3,71,920 students are appearing for examinations in four streams — Science (94,952), Commerce (32,586), Arts (2,32,865), Vocational (11,517). As many as 30,000 persons were deployed to ensure smooth conduct of examination.
