Civil rights groups slam U.P. Govt.

Civil rights groups have flayed the U.P. Govt. for failing to produce the Action Taken Report (ATR) along with the R.D. Nimesh Commission report.

Rihai Manch, a forum for the release of innocent youth implicated in terror cases, said the tabling of the report was “not enough”.

“What is the meaning of tabling the report without the ATR? What use is the report when it is not being implemented and the guilty officers not punished? Its common knowledge that the two youths were innocent,” Rihai Manch spokesperson Rajeev Yadav told The Hindu .

People’s Union for Civil Liberties secretary Kavita Srivastava said the move was a “face-saver” for the State in wake of the Muzaffarnagar communal violence.

She hit out at the government for its “casual attitude”.

Casual

“Usually, the State brings a report to the legislature along with the ATR. They have not done so and it shows how casual they are about it and about human lives,” she said.

Ms. Srivastava said that had it not been for a sustained dharna , the report would have been sent into cold storage.
