The Bombay High Court issued a contempt-of-court notice to the Maharashtra Chief Secretary on Monday for failing to pay compensation to the victims of the blasts at Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar in July 2011. The blasts killed 27 people and injured 127.
The court asked the government to pay the money in two days.
A public interest litigation petition said the court that in August, it gave the Thane Collector four weeks to pay the compensation of Rs. 3 lakh each announced by the Union government. The petition also sought enhanced compensation.
A Division Bench directed the government to pay the compensation by Wednesday and submit a compliance report by October 6. The Government Pleader told the court that the Collector had sent a reminder to the Principal Secretary for the disbursal of funds, but the government had not responded to it.
