Congress leader and former MLA from Chhattisgarh Shiv Deharia’s mother was murdered and his father critically injured when unknown assailants attacked them in Raipur on Saturday.
“Unknown persons attacked Congress leader Shiv Deharia’s parents between 3 and 5 am today (Saturday). His mother has died and his father has been critically injured in the attack. We have formed a special investigation team led by City Additional Superintendent of Police to investigate the case,” Raipur Inspector General of Police G.P. Singh told The Hindu .
Conflicting evidence
According to the IG, the evidence at the scene of the murder was “conflicting” and an attempt had been made to make it look like robbery.
Chhattisgarh Congress president Bhupesh Baghel did not rule out the possibility of a “planned murder”.
“It does not look like a case of robbery. His mother and father have injuries on the head. His mother was dragged by the attackers,” he said.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, Mr. Baghel and former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi visited Mr. Deharia’s father in hospital.
“Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi spoke to Shiv Deharia over the phone and consoled him,” party spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said.
