Chavan's fate still hangs in the balance

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's fate continues to hang in the balance even as the Mukherjee-Antony Committee is deliberating on the Adarsh Housing Society scam in Mumbai. “Yesterday in the night [Sunday], I said we require more time to study the documents and report to the Congress president. That position continues,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told journalists after a meeting with Sonia Gandhi here on Monday morning.

Others present at the meeting were Ms. Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, whose Ministry's clearance was also an issue in the matter. However, party sources said the Maharashtra issue was not discussed and only Tuesday's AICC meeting figured.

Mr. Chavan, who left for Mumbai in the morning after spending two days in the capital, is expected to be back for the AICC meeting. Highly placed sources, asked about the fate of the Chief Minister, said, “Well, he has offered to resign.” He offered his resignation on Saturday during a meeting with Ms. Gandhi, following allegations that he misused his position to secure flats for his relatives in the controversial Adarsh Housing Society.
