Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said a judicial inquiry would be held into the Dhule riots, and if police personnel were found guilty they would be placed under suspension.
His announcement came after a visit to the city, where on January 6 six people were killed in police firing following communal violence which erupted after a scuffle over a minor issue between two groups. Over 200 people including policemen were injured.
Mr. Chavan, who was accompanied by Home Minister R.R. Patil, announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of each of those killed in the police firing, and Rs. 3 lakh each to two victims, whose bullet-hit legs had to be amputated.
