Narendra Modi’s government is fine-tuning a major return-cum-rehabilitation package for the valley’s displaced population after a discussion with the stakeholders next week.
Highly placed sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Government revealed to The Hindu on Wednesday that the Union Minister of Finance and Defence Arun Jaitley made it clear during his visit on June 15 that the Centre would finalise and announce the rehabilitation package for the Kashmiri migrants within the current month.
Mr. Jaitley, along with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to hold a discussion with different Kashmiri Pandit groups “within a week.” The Prime Minister would subsequently announce the package.
Commissioner-Secretary Revenue and Relief Vinod Kaul said he had no knowledge of the developments in New Delhi.
Mr. Kaul said the State government gave top priority to the migrants who did not sell their houses and land in Kashmir. It proposed to enhance the amount for construction of a house from Rs. 7.50 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh for each family. For those who had sold their properties, the government proposed to acquire land and set up around 25 villages in or around the old Pandit population centres. The applicants would be given the land plus Rs 20 lakh per family for construction of the house.
