The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested former Gujarat Assistant Commissioner of Police N.K. Amin in connection with the fake encounter killing of Mumbai college girl Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Amin was recently freed on bail in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case by the Bombay High Court on health grounds. On Thursday, he was arrested from the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad where he was undergoing treatment.

Ishrat Jahan from Mumbra area in Mumbai, along with Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh, Zeeshan Johar, and Amjad Ali were killed, allegedly in a staged encounter with the Ahmedabad police, on the outskirts of the city on June 15, 2004.

Ahmedabad metropolitan magistrate S.P. Tamang had first termed these killings fake encounters in his report. The Crime Branch had called the victims members of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba and had claimed that they were in the city on a mission to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Later, Ishrat’s mother had moved the court seeking a CBI probe into the killing.

The Gujarat High Court had constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the killings. The team, in its report, said the murders were committed in cold blood when these four persons were in police custody.
