The Puducherry government has decided to implead with Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court to get its share of Cauvery water to irrigate crops in Karaikal.
Official sources told The Hindu that a decision to this effect was taken by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy after a meeting with officials on Tuesday, sources said adding a petition was likely to be filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The Tamil Nadu government has moved the court after Karnataka government refused to adhere to the directions of the Cauvery River Authority headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
A senior official in the territorial administration said failure to get Cauvery water for irrigating farm lands of Karaikal, particularly the vast area of paddy under cultivation, would have a disastrous effect.
As there was no clear indication from Karnataka to release 6 tmcft, which was sought by the Chief Minister at the CRA meeting, it was decided to implead with Tamil Nadu on sharing of water and no separate petition would be filed, the official said.
