A day after the Army was rushed to Gujarat to tackle the violence that had erupted in the State in the wake of the agitation for reservation by the Patidar (Patel) community, an uneasy calm prevailed in the city of Ahmedabad. Curfew prevailed in many parts of the city, and a heavy deployment of the Army and paramilitary personnel was seen, even as shops opened in some areas and vehicular traffic was sought to be normalised. Internet services on mobiles, however, remained suspended for the second day.
The State Assembly, which convened for the monsoon session, saw the entire Opposition Congress get suspended as MLAs shot off tough questions at the government on the Patidar agitation and its handling. Back in Delhi, after a video message by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealing for peace in Gujarat, he consulted his senior Ministers late on Wednesday evening on the events of the day.
