April 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:28 am IST - Shillong/Itanagar:

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced that by-polls to Tura Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya and Kanubari Assembly seat in Arunachal Pradesh will be held on May 16.

The by-poll to Tura was necessitated due to the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A. Sangma on March 4.

The Assembly by-poll is required as sitting Congress MLA Gabriel Denwang Wangsu has resigned from the post.

The notification for both the by-elections would be issued on April 22 and the last date for filing nominations has been fixed on April 29, the EC said in a statement.

Scrutiny of papers would be held on April 30 while the last date of withdrawal of papers is May 2. Counting of votes will take place on May 19.- PTI
