By-poll schedule to Tripura Assembly segment announced

August 18, 2014 02:35 pm | Updated 02:35 pm IST - Agartala:

The by-poll to Manu Assembly Constituency in south Tripura will be held on September 13. State’s election department will issue a formal notification on August 20 to initiate the process for election.

The tribal reserved assembly segment fell vacant after CPI (M) nominated Forest Minister Jitendra Choudhury to contest from East Tripura (ST) constituency in last Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Chouhdury defeated his Congress rival by over four lakh votes to win the election.

A heavyweight in state’s politics Jitendra Choudhury had won from Manu several times. He held different portfolios in CPI (M) led left front government which has been in power in Tripura since 1978 except a break for five years.

There is a chance of CPI (M) nominee winning by poll in Manu as the segment is a left stronghold and main opposition Congress weakened with BJP and Trinamool Congress eating its support base.

The counting of votes will take place on September 16. Multi corner contest is expected in the by poll.
