Buying a cycle in Jaipur? Prove your identity

Buying a bicycle in Jaipur is now a serious business. The police have made it mandatory for buyers to produce proof of identity. Ironically, you could still buy, without any such hassle, ammonium nitrate that could be used to make a bomb.

Use of cycles to plant bombs that caused the May 13, 2008 Jaipur blasts and the August 1 Pune blasts is behind the move.

Police Commissioner B.L. Soni said: “Shop-owners have been asked to collect photocopies of identity document and mobile numbers...”
