The former West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, campaigned here on Tuesday for the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s candidate, Nandini Mukhopadhyay, who faces Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the by-election that is scheduled to be held on September 25.
With Dr. Mukhopadhyay by his side, Mr. Bhattacharjee rode in an open jeep on the streets of the Bhowanipore constituency. The procession was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of the victims in the recent earthquake that convulsed Sikkim and the northern parts of West Bengal.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay, who is making her election debut, said that her campaign will emphasise the policies of the Left Front government for over the last 34 years that benefited the common people and will also try to highlight the inadequacies of the present government led by Ms. Banerjee.
