The Border Security Force (BSF) made huge seizures in Tripura in first month of the year, but the smuggling menace is far from ending. The force which is responsible to manage 856 km boundary with Bangladesh in the state captured goods worth over Rs 1 Crore in January.
A BSF official said on Friday that contrabands, textiles, narcotics and live stocks were seized at various places. He said they were detected within assigned jurisdiction of the border.
BSF said items worth Rs. 97,69,035 seized during attempts to smuggle out to Bangladesh and Rs. 4,44,178 was made while coming from Bangladesh. The border force also nabbed 22 people, 10 of them Bangladeshis, on charge of illegal trespass in January alone.
The smuggling wave in Tripura continues even after construction of barbed wire fencing along three fourth of border and introduction of sophisticated gadgets like night vision device and radar to detect human movement on the border.
Troopers from the BSF and its counterpart Border Guards, Bangladesh (BGB) recently conducted joint border patrol in Tripura frontier to enhance coordination between them to deal with smuggling and illegal infiltration.
