Two beach shack (temporary eateries on Goa’s coast) workers accused of sexually assaulting and leaving a 15-year-old British girl to die on a Goa beach in 2008 were acquitted by a trial court here on Friday.
Samson D'Souza and Placido Carvalho were acquitted by the Goa Children's Court president Vandana Tendulkar in a one line order, at the end of a trial which lasted for eight years. The order will be made public later.
"I am shocked," mother of the deceased British girl, Fiona Mackeown, told presspersons after the verdict.
The then government handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation after the mother raised doubts over probe by Goa police.
Moreover, the suspicious death on north coastal Goa’s Anjuna beach, which hogged headlines in national and international media for quite som time had put the spotlight on the issue of safety and security of tourists on the State's beaches, which attract nearly 3.5 million tourists, including foreigners.
