Brides leave marital homes for lack of toilets

They took their cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, made during his I-Day speech, for a toilet to be built in every household

August 19, 2014 12:35 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - Lucknow:

Six newly-wed women in Uttar Pradesh walked out of their in-laws’ homes when they found the houses had no toilets.

Taking their cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call in his Independence Day address for a toilet to be built in every household, especially in rural areas, the young women, all of whom are from Kushinagar district, complained to their husbands and in-laws.

Neelam, Kalawati, Shakina, Niranjan, Gudiya and Sita of Khesiya village protested when they found there were no toilets attached to their houses.

Within a few weeks they returned to their parents’ homes.

Sulabh International, an NGO working to provide low-cost sanitation, has announced it will build toilets for the brides for free.

Two years back, Priyanka Bharti, a bride from Maharajganj, was honoured for taking a similar step.

Bharti now works as a Sulabh motivator and has also appeared with actor Vidya Balan in a sanitation advertisement.
