A 26-year-old brain dead woman, whose organs were harvested this past weekend at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences , has saved three lives.

She was sleeping with her one-year-old girl and husband on the terrace of her house when the under-construction structure collapsed killing the child and leaving her husband severely injured.

She was admitted to a private city hospital with extensive brain injuries.

“The woman was declared brain dead on Saturday and her family was counselled to donate her organs,” AIIMS Director M.C. Misra told The Hindu  on Monday.

“The woman was transported from the local hospital to the AIIMS early Sunday morning while keeping her on life support system. Her organs were assessed and we decided to harvest her liver, kidney, heart valves, skin, eyes and bones,” he said .

The kidneys were transplanted on a 14-year-old boy and a 25-year-old woman at the AIIMS by Sunday afternoon, while the liver was used by another city hospital. “All the other harvested body parts have been preserved for future use,” said Dr. Misra.

Meanwhile the deceased’s husband has now been discharged.

The victim is also survived by an elder daughter who was outside the house when the accident occurred.

The 26-year-old’s liver, kidney, heart valves, skin, eyes and bones were assessed, harvested, and transplanted on a teen and two others
