A 45-year-old woman lost her life on Sunday morning when a 17-year-old boy lost control of his luxury car and crushed her. The boy also hit another car before running away. The police later nabbed him on the basis of a broken number plate and CCTV footage.

“The accident took place at Malad near Gudiya Pada on Link Road at around 7 am when the accused was driving his Skoda car . He hit Anita Chauhan who was crossing the road. He then hit a car before running away,” Raghunath Bagul, Senior Police Inspector of Bangurnagar police station, told The Hindu.

He said that the accused studied at a local college and his father was a businessman. “When we went to his house to arrest him, his parents told us that he had taken the car away without their knowledge. We have booked him under section 304 [of the Indian Penal Code] and various sections of Motor Vehicle Act for causing death due to negligence and driving a car without licence. We will produce him in court on Monday,” he said. The police are awaiting medical reports to know if the accused was under the influence of alcohol during the accident.

Police sources said that the impact of the accident was so high that the woman was dragged for some distance. When the accused realised he had hit a woman, he tried to take a U-turn. He hit a stationary car in the process. As he hit another car, his number plate broke and half the plate fell down at the accident spot. Later, the police scanned the CCTV footage and arrested the accused.

The deceased woman was a sweeper and stayed with her husband and four children at Malwani. The accused was allegedly returning home from a friend's birthday party in Madh Island when the accident happened. He was alone in the car and had dropped a friend some time ago, a police official said.
